In 2010, scientists from Japan and England designed an experiment by placing oat flakes in the shape of the cities around Tokyo. Yellow slime mold (Physarum polycephalum) was placed in the center, and gradually ate its way outwards.
After a day, the slime mold refined and optimized tunnels of nutrients across the city model. The resulting structure looked a lot like the efficient Tokyo subway system.
From the slime mold’s behavior, researchers generated mathematical models to describe this complex biological network formation.
